About Us
| Luton Museums Service was established by Luton Borough Council in 1927. In March 2008 the Service became part of the Luton Culture. Part of the Luton Culture, but an independent charity, the museums now delivers cultural services on behalf of Luton Borough Council. | |
The museums in Luton is also one of four partner museums services in the East of England that are part of Renaissance, an initiative set up by central government in 2002 to address years of underfunding in the museum sector. Renaissance aims to transform England's regional museums; making them world class and fit for the 21st century and is funded by MLA (Museums, Libraries and Archives Council). Today, the museums in Luton include two museums, Wardown Park Museum, Stockwood Discovery Centre and a Nature Conservation Service, John Dony Field Centre. Stockwood Discovery Centre is a spectacular £6.5m re-development of the former Stockwood Park Museum made possible thanks to a £3.7 million cash injection from the Heritage Lottery Fund along with £1.2 million Objective 2 European Funding and very generous contributions from Luton Borough Council, the DCMS/Wolfson Foundation Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN), Garfield Weston Foundation, Renaissance and other trusts and groups. Members of the public have also been extremely supportive with donations and by helping to shape the displays and gardens through special projects, giving their time and expertise to support the plans. The service also provides formal and informal education services, curatorial, advisory and corporate planning functions in relation to heritage, land management, cultural diversity, social inclusion and lifelong learning. We offer excellent benefits and consider our employees to be our greatest assets. Please click here for all up-to-date job vacancies with the Luton Culture. .
